Most people arrive having already been told to rest, take something for it, and see whether it settles. If that had worked you would not be reading this. The first visit at our Marietta practice exists to answer one question properly: what is actually causing this, and is it something we can fix?
A conversation first
We start with what you can no longer do. Which side you sleep on now. What happens at hour three of a desk day. Whether you have stopped lifting your grandchild, stopped running, or started planning your week around the pain. That history tells us more than the location of the ache does.
This part is not a formality. Two people with identical scans can have completely different problems, and the difference usually shows up in what changed and when.
Examination
Orthopedic, neurological and movement testing, done in a sequence that rules things in and out rather than confirming a hunch. We assess how the spine and joints move under load, where the movement is being borrowed from, and whether nerve involvement is present.
- Range of motion and joint restriction, segment by segment
- Neurological screening: reflexes, sensation, muscle strength
- Orthopedic tests specific to your complaint
- Posture and gait under normal load
- Imaging review if you already have films
Imaging only if it changes the plan
X-rays are taken when findings indicate them — suspected structural change, trauma, unexplained progression, or an examination that does not add up. They are not taken as a matter of routine, because an image that does not change the treatment plan is cost and radiation for no return.
Findings, in language you can repeat
Before anything is treated, you get the findings: what is wrong, why it started, what we can influence and what we cannot. If you cannot explain your own diagnosis to your spouse that evening, the explanation failed.
A written plan, with a number on it
You leave with a plan on paper: how many visits, over what period, what it costs in total, what improvement should look like by which week, and what we do if that improvement does not arrive. A plan with no review point is not a plan.
We give you the total for any plan before you agree to it.
Films or reports from the last two years, on disc, in an app or on paper.
Including supplements. Some change what treatment is appropriate.
Movement testing is more accurate without stiff clothing.
Arriving rushed makes the history less useful.
When this is not a chiropractic case
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness through the saddle area
- Progressive weakness in a leg or arm rather than pain alone
- Pain following significant trauma, a fall or a collision
- Unexplained weight loss, fever or night pain that wakes you
- A history of cancer, osteoporosis or long-term steroid use
Any of these means medical assessment first. We refer, and we say so at the examination rather than after a course of care.
Thirty to forty-five minutes. Most of that is examination and conversation. If treatment is appropriate on the same day, it happens at the end of the visit — but nothing is done before you understand what we found.
No. We do not accept insurance in our office, including Medicare. We will give you an itemised receipt so you can submit it to your insurer yourself. We are also a ChiroHealthUSA member, which lets us offer a discounted cash rate to members — we can enroll you in the office. HSA and FSA cards are welcome and payment plans are available. You will have the full cost in writing before you commit to anything.
There is a flat rate for the examination, and treatment plans are quoted as a total before you agree to them. No packages are sold on a first visit.
Often, but not always. If the examination points to something that needs imaging or a medical opinion first, we say so and refer. Adjusting before that is answered is not care, it is guesswork.
No. Georgia is a direct access state, so you can see a chiropractor without a physician referral. If your plan requires one for reimbursement we will tell you when we check your benefits.
Something you can move in. If you are being examined for a lower back, hip or knee complaint, shorts or loose trousers make the movement testing more accurate.
The examination tells us. We treat mechanical spine, joint and nerve problems, and if your findings point somewhere else we say so at the examination and help you get to the right care — not after a course of treatment.
